A RESIDENT COMPANY

Carolina Ballet Theatre is proud to share an amazing program impacting local boys and young men for over fiveyears. The CBT Boys Dance Program started to give young men the chance to join an inclusive organization where they could express themselves through the art of dance.

This tuition-free program is unique for many reasons. The class meets once a week for 20 weeks on Thursdays from 7:00 to 7:45. Boys ages 8-14 are eligible to apply. Although it focuses on ballet, boys who choose to audition do not have to have any prior dance experience. While a background in dance can be beneficial, it is not required. This program gives young men the opportunity to try something new and exciting.

These young men can also audition for a spot in one of Carolina Ballet Theatre’s professional performances at the Peace Center. Carolina Ballet Artistic Director Hernan Justo says, “The boys are always so excited. They often come into my office, jumping up and down, asking if they have rehearsal this weekend!”.

Martin Justo, one of Carolina Ballet Theatre’s male professional Dancers, teaches this program. Martin has had 20 years of professional dancing under his belt. He has toured throughout Uruguay with CBT and has traveled and performed as a guest artist in Fujinomiya, Japan, dancing the pas de deux from Giselle, La Bayadere, and Swan Lake.
Some of his signature roles are the charming young Nutcracker Prince in Hernan Justo’s The Nutcracker: Once Upon a Time in Greenville and the male soloist in A Tango for Angelina. Martin has also performed works by renowned contemporary choreographers such as Dwight Rhoden and Alonzo King.
